Happy Youth Skills Day!
The theme of World Youth Skills Day 2024 is ‘Youth Skills for Peace and Development’, which, according to the United Nations, underscores the crucial role young people play in peacebuilding and conflict resolution
World Youth Skills Day is an annual event launched by the UN in 2014.
This year, emphasis has been given to upskill youth for peace and development.
On World Youth Skills Day, UNICEF calls on stakeholders and partners to join hands and invest in equipping youth with the skills and tools they need to thrive and create change for a more prosperous, peaceful and sustainable future.
This day is celebrated by youth, education institutions, employers, policymakers, and development partners to underscore the importance of developing skills for young people’s engagement, employment, and empowerment towards sustainable development.
The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan and Rotaract Club of Miles & Towers are lending their support in upskilling our youths for a productive tomorrow on the 18th of July, 2024.
On the 18th of July, 2024, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan hosted a workshop in commemoration of the WorldYouthSkillsDay themed; Unleashing Youths Potential for Peace Building and Sustainable.
The Workshop aimed to train, motivate, and inspire youths to acquire skills and contribute to society at large through peace building and sustainable development.
During the workshop, the youths were trained on basic book keeping and financial management, there were discussions on positive peace, accessing loanes and grants, forming cooperatives, waste to wealth, protecting the environment and using social media to promote businesses and generating income.
The keynote speaker, George Etomi, encouraged the youths to pick up skills, take up internships, and vocational training to be self-reliant and productive. He also stressed the need for youth engagement and upskilling as crucial for peace and sustainable development.
The event also included breakout sessions in areas of interest for closeup discussions, mentorship, and counseling.
The workshop was concluded with Outstanding Youth Excellence Awards to two notable Youth Change Makers, Esther Ubak and Delight Chigeru, for their contributions to education, training, and Enlightenment on wealth creation and environmental protection and sustainability.
The event aligns with three of Rotary International’s seven areas of focus: Economic and Community Development, Environmental Protection and Peacebuilding, and Conflict Resolution.
Thanks to all our speakers, mentors, and sponsors.
