History of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan

The Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan is a historic club of significant firsts. It was the first club to be chartered in the new Rotary District 9141 and the first all CEO club in Africa. The idea of starting a Rotary club of service-oriented CEO’s in the cosmopolitan area of Port Harcourt city, was the brainchild of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt GRA during 2016/2017 Rotary year. The board of the club took a decision to commence survey processes same year. The club was proposed to cover the Old GRA, Amadi Flats, Moscow Rd, State Secretariat and Azikiwe Rd.

The process for organizing the Provisional Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Cosmopolitan was approved by DG Ikponmwosa with Virginia Major as the New Club Adviser and an informative meeting held at The Crib Lifestyle Hotel on July 4, 2017.  Four persons; Innocent Iyalla – Harry, Tamunoibim Semenitari, Izobe Obozuwa- Spiff and Ifeoma Ifejika; attended that first meeting with President Jerus Uvieghara of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt G.R.A and the New Club Adviser, P.A.G Virginia Major.

On July 11th, the inaugural pre- charter meeting held at the Crib Hotel, Creek Hospital Close, Old GRA in Port Harcourt on July.  Nine people attended the meeting. The Sergeant at Arms collection for that historic meeting was N17,000.

Other fellowships were held subsequently. Top Rotary leaders spoke to the members at different times. The list includes Rotary International Director Elect, Yinka Babalola, District Governor Ikponmwosa Ogiemudia, Past District Governor Gabriel Toby, Past District Governor Ijeoma Pearl Okoro, District Governor Nominee Nze Anizor, Past Assistant Governor Virginia Major, Past President Arthur Kalagbor during whose tenure the idea of the new club was mooted and Assistant Governor Uyobong Uko.
